Walmart AI Agent Profiles Give Every Shopping Agent Its Own Identity and Spending Limit

Until now, an agent shopping at Walmart signed in as the customer and left no trace of itself. The retailer’s fix is a separate identity, a budget and a rulebook for every agent.

Walmart AI agent profiles, announced on October 21, 2026, give every AI shopping agent a separate identity inside a customer’s Walmart account, with its own purchase record and a spending limit the customer sets. Walmart says the profiles launch within a month, alongside an Agent Gateway for machine access and a written set of terms that agents must follow or be blocked.

Today an AI Agent Shopping at Walmart Looks Exactly Like the Customer

Walmart’s announcement describes the current arrangement plainly. An agent that shops for someone signs in with that person’s own account, so every order lands in one history and nothing marks which ones the agent placed. The agent also has to work through the website built for people, clicking through pages and sign-in steps. Walmart calls that slow and error-prone and says agents can get stuck along the way. The result is a system where a delegate holds the owner’s full credentials and leaves no separate trail.

Walmart AI Agent Profiles Separate Agent Orders and Cap Their Spending

Under the new design, each agent a customer authorizes gets a dedicated profile within the account, and its purchases are listed apart from the customer’s own. The customer then picks the approval rule. One option is to approve every purchase. The other is to let the agent buy freely up to a limit, and Walmart gives $50, $100 and $200 as examples. The customer can switch an agent off at any time. Walmart compares the setup to adding an authorized cardholder to a credit card, where the bank tracks that person’s spending separately and the primary holder sets the cap.

TechCrunch’s Sarah Perez reported that a profile is created the first time a customer uses a given agent through Walmart’s gateway, and that any Walmart account can use it without a Walmart+ membership. Walmart also says an agent sees the same prices a person would see on Walmart.com, summed up in its line “We price products, not people.”

The Walmart Agent Gateway Replaces Web Clicking With an MCP Interface

The Walmart Agent Gateway is the machine-facing half of the plan. It uses the Model Context Protocol, the standard that lets AI agents call external tools and data, so an approved agent can search inventory and place orders without imitating a human in a browser. Walmart says it will open first as a beta for companies and developers. The gateway can also help an agent reorder a customer’s regular items without handing over the customer’s wider purchase history. Walmart’s example is a shopper who usually buys sourdough bread or one brand of milk: the agent gets pointed to those items and nothing more. Walmart President and CEO John Furner presented the plans at the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco, TechCrunch reported.

Walmart’s Agent Terms Ban Payment Access and Block Agents That Break Them

The third piece is a published set of terms for agents. Approval of agent purchases is on by default, and Walmart may demand extra approval even for an order inside an agent’s limit. Agents may not act beyond what the shopper intends, may access only the information a task needs and the customer allows, and never receive payment card details or the ability to add or change payment methods. The agent maker’s own privacy policy governs what the agent receives. Walmart’s returns process applies even when an agent does not act as intended. Any agent that breaks the terms will be blocked from the site.

Walmart and Amazon Have Chosen Opposite Answers to AI Shoppers

The launch arrives as Amazon has started blocking AI agents from buying on behalf of shoppers, TechCrunch reported, and as several travel and booking sites have locked agents out entirely. Walmart already sells through conversational integrations with Meta’s Muse, ChatGPT and Gemini, according to its announcement. Its bet is that agent traffic is coming either way, and that it is safer to give agents a governed front door than to force them through the human one.

Why This Matters for Engineering Leadership

Walmart’s starting point is the setup many internal AI agents still run on: the agent borrows a person’s credentials and acts with that person’s full authority, so nobody can later separate what the human did from what the software did. Walmart’s fix gives each agent four things, and each one maps to an internal control. A separate identity per agent becomes its own service account instead of a shared login. Approval by default with an optional spending cap becomes a hard limit on what an agent can spend, change or deploy before a human signs off. A separate purchase record becomes a separate audit log. The off switch becomes revocation that one person can trigger without a code change. The terms add a fifth lesson. Walmart decided in advance who absorbs the cost when an agent gets it wrong, and wrote that down before the first mistake. Engineering leaders deploying agents against their own systems should be able to answer the same question, in writing, for every agent they run.

FAQ

What are Walmart AI agent profiles?

They are dedicated profiles inside a customer’s Walmart account, one for each AI agent the customer authorizes. Each agent’s purchases appear separately from the customer’s own.

When do Walmart Agent Profiles launch?

Walmart said on October 21, 2026 that Agent Profiles will launch within the next month. They apply to both Walmart and Sam’s Club shopping.

How do spending limits work for AI agents at Walmart?

Customers can require approval for every agent purchase or let the agent buy within a limit they set, such as $50, $100 or $200. Approval for every purchase is the default.

What is the Walmart Agent Gateway?

It is an interface built on the Model Context Protocol that lets approved agents search and buy from Walmart without driving the human website. It starts as a beta for companies and developers.

Can an AI agent see a customer’s payment card at Walmart?

No. Walmart’s terms say agents do not receive payment card information and cannot add or change a customer’s payment methods.

What happens if an AI agent buys the wrong thing at Walmart?

Walmart says its normal returns process applies, including when an agent does not act as intended. Agents that break its terms will be blocked from the site.
